From David:
hey kp, fantastic debut year for the green and gold in 07.. hope you can emulate that next season my man!!! were expecting to to flying out the gate this year & get the esks back where we belong....... my question was, i was wondering if you have, or ever considered playing in the arena football league??? or is year round football to much of a toll on an athlete long term??
Hey David,
I actually played in the arena league for a season in 2004 for the Colorado Crush and had a good time. While the pace of league is fun, I just didn't really fall in love with a couple of aspects of the league. First off, the wall is undefeated. At my height, every time I hit the thing I went into the 3rd row which gets old fast. Watching them roll the astro turf out over top of an ice rink, cement floor, or basketball court wasn't that appealing either! I think for a smaller, more elusive player the small size of the field is a bit more appealing as well. For me though, I'm a bit of a long strider and as soon as I would be reaching a good speed, I'd be hitting a wall.
Finally, the rules of the game are designed to score a ton of points so the defence is more of a disadvantage than usual. For someone 6'1" 210 at the time, and with my skill set...I found it a bit more like 3 on 3 basketball against shorter guys, than football.
